In the wake of Gretchen Carlson’s lawsuit against former Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, her memoir of her time at Fox—working alongside Megyn Kelly, Bill O’Reilly, Steve Doocy, and other prominent conservative news personalities—is more relevant than ever.
In this candid memoir, celebrity news anchorwoman Gretchen Carlson shares her inspiring story and offers important takeaways about what it means to strive for and find success in the real world. With warmth and wit, she takes readers from her Minnesota childhood, when she became a violin prodigy, through attending Stanford and later rising to anchor of The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson on Fox News after working her way up from local television stations.

Carlson addresses the intense competitive effort of winning the Miss America Pageant, the challenges she’s faced as a woman in broadcast television, and how she manages to balance work and family as the wife of high-profile sports agent Casey Close and devoted mother to their two children. An unceasing advocate for respect and equality for women, Carlson writes openly about her own struggles with body image, pageant stereotypes, building her career, and having the courage to speak her mind. Encouraging women to believe in themselves, chase their dreams, and never give up, Carlson emerges in Getting Real as a living example of personal strength and perseverance.

A Fox News journalist and talk show host sets out to prove that she is not "an empty St. John suit in five-inch stiletto heels." The child of devout Christians, Minnesota native Carlson's first love was music. She began playing violin at age 6 and quickly revealed that she was not only a prodigy, but also a little girl who thrived on pleasing audiences. Working with top teachers, she developed her art over the years. But by 16, Carlson began "chafing at [the] rigid, structured life" of a concert violinist-in-training and temporarily put music aside. At the urging of her mother, the high achiever set her sights on winning the Miss T.E.E.N. pageant, where she was first runner-up. College life at Stanford became yet another quest for perfection that led Carlson to admit it was "not attainable" after she earned a C in one class. At the end of her junior year and again at the urging of her mother, Carlson entered the 1989 Miss America pageant, which she would go on to win thanks to a brilliant violin performance. Dubbed the "smart Miss America," Carlson struggled with pageant stereotypes as well as public perceptions of who she was. Being in the media spotlight every day during her reign, however, also helped her decide on a career in broadcast journalism. Yet success did not come easily. Sexual harassment dogged her, and many expressed skepticism about her abilities due to her pageant past. Even after she rose to national prominence, first as a CBS news broadcaster and then as a Fox talk show host, Carlson continued-and continues-to be labeled as "dumb or a bimbo." Her history clearly demonstrates that she is neither. However, Carlson's overly earnest tone, combined with her desire to show her Minnesota "niceness...in action," as well as the existence of "abundant brain cells," dampens the book's impact. For the author's fans.

Carlson, host of Fox News Channel's The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson, offers a memoir of her life, so far. In a conversational tone, the author shares memories of growing up in Anoka, MN, with a family of Swedish descent, affectionately relating how her grandfather called her "Sparkles." She describes her childhood as a violin prodigy and eventual transition to pageantry, winning the 1989 Miss America pageant. (The violin was such a significant part of her life that she played it during her talent portion of the pageant.) Later, she notes that her "crown" was an asset and liability for her career as it gave her notoriety but caused her to be stereotyped as well. After graduating from Stanford University, Carlson went on to establish a career as a television commentator first on The Early Show on CBS and subsequently on Fox & Friends on Fox News Channel. She painfully relays how problems with a stalker plagued her, as did the sexual harassment she endured during her rise. Labeling herself a "culture warrior," Carlson details how faith guided her through her challenges. VERDICT A poignant memoir for Carlson's fans and Miss America aficionados.
