"An empathetic tale that treats homelessness with respect and makes it visible."—Kirkus Reviews
Seventeen-year-old Abby Lunde and her family are living on the streets. They had a normal life back in Omaha but, thanks to her mother's awful mistake, they had to leave behind what little they had for a new start in Rochester. Abby tries to be an average teenager—fitting in at school, dreaming of a boyfriend, college and a career in music. But Minnesota winters are unforgiving, and so are many teenagers.
Her stepdad promises to put a roof over their heads, but times are tough for everyone and Abby is doing everything she can to keep her shameful secret from her new friends. The divide between rich and poor in high school is painfully obvious, and the stress of never knowing where they're sleeping or where they'll find their next meal is taking its toll on the whole family.
As secrets are exposed and the hope for a home fades, Abby knows she must trust those around her to help. But will her new friends let her down like the ones back home, or will they rise to the challenge to help them find a normal life?
"We, her readers, are drawn in from the first page. This lovely book has tremendous heart."—Brandon Hobson, author of Where the Dead Sit Talking

A mother's misdeed leads to scandal, ending friendships and forcing a family move to a new state and into a life of homelessness. After high school science teacher Claire Lunde is caught having an affair with Coach Hawkins, she resigns and moves her family from Omaha, Nebraska, to Rochester, Minnesota. As a result, her daughter, high school senior Abby Lunde, must enroll at a new school. Though she makes friends quickly, Abby also makes enemies, namely Trish Landry, popular rich girl and ex-girlfriend of the football quarterback who is Abby's new boyfriend, Zach Andrews. As if navigating new friendships, young love, and the college application process weren't enough, the stresses of keeping up appearances of normal life while living out of the family van threaten to be too much for Abby. Abby worries whether the new friends she's made will bail on her as easily as her old ones did in the wake of her mother's indiscretion should they discover the secret of her being homeless. An entertaining read, the story unfolds organically, and the backstory of what led the Lunde family to Minnesota is nicely woven in through well-timed flashbacks. Though driven by the issue of homelessness, the story allows other themes like forgiveness, acceptance, and finding one's place to rise to the surface as well. A white default is assumed. An empathetic tale that treats homelessness with respect and makes it visible. (Fiction. 14-18)COPYRIGHT(2018) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Grades 8-10 When her mother makes a reckless mistake and the family falls on financial hardship, Abby Lunde finds herself in Rochester, Minnesota, as her family tries to get back on their feet. Abby anxiously faces the challenges of a new school, but as nervous as she is about meeting new people, she's more worried about keeping her family's secret: they are homeless. As the rough Minnesota winter approaches, returning to normal proves harder than Abby or her family ever thought it would be. With a setting similar to Natalie D. Richards' What You Hide (2018), this exposes the importance of community assistance and empathy for homeless families. Armstrong seamlessly combines the challenges that teens normally face in daily life with the struggles of being homeless in a new environment. This emotional read with an inspiring and heart-wrenching message encourages readers to walk a mile in another's shoes before passing judgment.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
